Technique names can be useful shorthand, but they should not replace a full assessment. The same label may be used differently by different injectors, and no named technique is automatically the best choice.
1. Subtle Hydration and Soft Volume
A conservative plan may focus on gentle fullness and smoother-looking contour while preserving the existing character of the lips. This can be appropriate for a first treatment, a maintenance visit, or someone who prefers a result that is difficult for others to identify.
2. Border and Cupid’s Bow Definition
Some treatment plans focus more on definition than volume. Careful placement may help clarify the vermilion border or the peaks of the Cupid’s bow. The clinician must balance definition with softness so the lip does not appear rigid or overoutlined.
3. Proportion and Asymmetry Support
Natural faces and lips are not perfectly symmetrical. Filler may support a more balanced appearance in selected cases, but it cannot guarantee identical sides. Your clinician should explain which differences are likely to respond and which are related to bone structure, dental support, muscle movement, or other factors.
4. The Russian Lip Technique
The term “Russian lips” generally refers to a placement style intended to emphasize vertical height and Cupid’s bow definition rather than forward projection. It is not inherently better, safer, or more natural than other approaches. Suitability depends on your anatomy, current filler, tissue characteristics, product choice, and desired result.
If this style interests you, bring reference images to explain the elements you like. The provider should translate that preference into a plan appropriate for your own face rather than attempting to duplicate another person’s result.
5. Lip Filler vs. Lip Flip
| Option |
What it changes |
What it does not do |
| Lip filler |
Uses dermal filler to add or restore volume and refine contour. |
Does not relax the muscle that rolls the upper lip inward. |
| Lip flip |
Uses a neuromodulator to alter selected muscle movement around the upper lip. |
Does not add filler volume and requires a separate assessment. |
